Hi, I’m Jiaying!

I think and write about cinema, immersive storytelling, and the textured, often hidden forms that shape how art and media get made, shared, and felt.

I hold a PhD in Film and Television Studies from the University of Glasgow, where my research traces the assemblages of race, class, gender, and capital in transnational flows. I approach audio-visual cultures through embodied, affective, and sensorial lenses, paying attention to how stories move through systems, spaces, and people. I’m interested in the infrastructures, labour, and relational practices that underpin cultural production, especially across disciplines, technologies, and geographies.

These days, I’m deepening my creative practice through film programming, scriptwriting, and interdisciplinary projects. I’m especially drawn to productive forms of art-making that foreground process, collaboration, and materialities. This ethos shapes how I approach film education as a form of cultural work that builds knowledge, relationships, and access.

As part of this ongoing commitment, I founded the Singapore Online Film Database, a digital resource cataloging the films, organisations, and venues at the heart of Singapore’s vibrant film ecosystem.

Thanks for being here. If you’d like to connect around cinema, education, cultural work, or alternative ways of thinking and making, I’d love to hear from you.
